Philosophy of Canang and Kwangen



Philosophy of Canang

The word canang is derived from Old Javanese vocabulary meaning betel presented to the highly respected guests. In earlier times, betel really had high value. After Hinduism developed in Bali, the betel then became an important element in religious rituals and other activities.
In Bali, one kind of the offerings is called canang because the basic element of each canang is the betel itself. It cannot be said to have a religious meaning without being equipped with porosan whose main ingredient is betel. Ingredients of canang are ceper or square base made of banana leaf and then on the base are respectively composed of foliage (plawa), porosan, urasari and various flowers.
Meaning of respective canang ingredient:
  • Plawa is foliage. It has been mentioned in the Yajña Prakerti palm-leaf manuscript that plawa symbolizes the growing sacred and silent mind, so that it can counteract the bad influence of worldly passion.
  • Porosan is made of areca nut and lime wrapped in betel leaves. In the Yajña Prakerti palm-leaf manuscript areca nut, betel leaf and lime are symbols of worshiping the Almighty God in its manifestation as Hindu Trinity. Areca nut symbolizes the worship of Lord Brahma; lime symbolizes the worship of Lord Shiva; and the betel symbolizes worship of Lord Vishnu.
  • Urasari consisting of jejahitan, reringgitan, and tetuwasan are symbols of accuracy and longevity of mind and symbol of invocation to God in order our natural environment are in harmony and balance.
  • Flower symbolizes sincerity. Whatever binding ourselves in this mundane world should be allowed because sooner or later we will even leave behind this world.
Therefore, canang signifies the struggle of human life by always asking for help and protection to Almighty God to be able to create, maintain and negate that should be created, maintained and removed for the success of ideals of human life namely happiness.
In terms of its use, shape and contents, canang can be classified into several types such as the Canang Genten, Canang Burat Wangi, Lenge Wangi, Canang Sari, Canang Meraka, and others.


Philosophy of Kwangen

Kwangen is derived from Old Javanese vocabulary wangi which means fragrant. After getting prefix ke- and suffix -an becomes kewangen and after undergoing phonetic assimilation becomes kwangen meaning fragrance that functions to scent the name of Supreme God.
Kwangen is used as a means in ritual as a complement of upakara or oblation. It is widely used in the worship. In addition, it is also used as a complement to the Panca Yajña ritual:
  • Deva Yajña, as a complement of banten tetebasan, prayascita and various types of sesayut.
  • Rishi Yajña, used to complement banten tetebasan.
  • Pitri Yajña, used to symbolically revive the corpse consecrated by putting the kwangen on every joint of the dead body.
  • Manusha Yajña, use in otonan or ‘real birthday’ based on pawukon calendar, tooth filing, marriage, and complementary offerings.
  • Bhuta Yajña, used in ceremonies like memakuh and mecaru.
Ingredients used to make kwangen:
  • Kojong, made from a sheet of banana leaf in triangular taper symbolizing the ardha candra (half-moon).
  • Pelawa, a piece of foliage like cabbage palm leaf, screwpine, croton and other green foliage symbolizing peace.
  • Porosan, made of two pieces of betel leaf rolled with an upturned and face down position, and then they are combined. It’s called porosan silih asih representing the mutual relationship between human devotion and affection of God.
  • Kembang payas, in semi-circular shape made of a series of jaggy young coconut leaf arrangement. Semi-circular shape symbolizes tone, while the jaggy leaf arrangement symbolizes sincerity.
  • Flowers, namely fresh and fragrant flower symbolizes the freshness and purity of mind in organizing sacrificial ritual.
  • Two pieces of perforated coin symbolize two bindus (tone); the money symbolizes the essence of mind. Besides, the money also functions as compensation to all the existing shortcomings.

Types of Canang

Canang Genten
Canang genten has the simplest form describing God in its manifestation as Trinity. As the base, devotees can use taledan, ceper or square banana leaf. On the base is placed various ingredients such as: flowers and leaves, porosan consisting of one/two pieces of betel leaf and stuffed a little lime and areca nut, and then clamped with a piece of young coconut leaf. Meanwhile, the flowers covered with tangkih or kojong made of young coconut leaf. Kojong in round shape is called uras sari.
Canang genten, both in large and small size, is even always used to complement the other offerings. However, the ingredients and porosan in use are different.

Canang Lengawangi – Buratwangi
It has the same shape as canang genten but added with buratwangi and two kinds of lengawangi. The three elements above are put in a kojong or conical base. Buratwangi is made from rice, mashed turmeric and water mixed together with sandalwood or rosewood water. Sometimes it is blended with fragrant roots. White lengawangi (fragrant oil) is made of white agarwood and bees wax mixed with coconut oil. Meanwhile, the black lengawangi is made from coconut oil mixed with white beans and hyacinth bean fried until charred and crushed.
Sometimes, this mixture is also garnished with a mix of sweet potatoes and taro, which are also fried until being charred. By and large, to get a good mixture, the coconut oil should be heated first, and then blended with other supplies.
Canang buratwangi is used on particular days such as on full moon, black moon, Sarasvati day and complement to grandiose offerings.

Canang Sari
It has a shape of somewhat different from the canang genten. It is divided into two parts. Its lower part can be shaped like a round surface or square or taledan. Similarly, it is often embellished with triangle or plekir ornament on the edges. This part contains plawa, porosan, sugarcane, kekiping (a rice flour snack), gold banana or the like and yellow rice covered with tangkih. It can also be coupled with lengawangi and buratwangi as used in the canang buratwangi. As topping, it is filled with a variety of flowers arranged as beautifully as possible and covered with uras sari or sampian uras.
Canang sari comes with sesari in the form of banknotes, coins or perforated coins. It is also complemented with sugarcane, kekiping and golden banana called raka-raka. The raka-raka symbolizes the angels. Gold banana symbolizes Lord Mahadev, but all the bananas in general symbolize Lord Kumara, while sugar cane symbolizes Lord Brahma.
Canang sari is used to complement the other offerings or used on particular days such as: on Kliwon, full moon and black moon or praying in the shrine.

Canang Pesucian
This canang is also called canang pengraos consisting of two bases or ceper. At the bottom, it contains lime, areca nut, gambier and tobacco covered with conical wrap or kojong. It is composed of some betel leaves, while the base contains bija and fragrant oil covered with celemik or water lettuce and then fitted with fragrant flowers.

Canang Meraka
As the base of the canang meraka is used ceper or tamas, then it is filled with sugarcane, bananas, fruits, snacks and a few types of sampian called Srikakili made of young coconut leaf and then was filled with plawa, porosan and flowers.

As a matter of fact, there are still many other types of canang like the Canang Tubungan, Canang Gantal, Canang Yasa, Canang Pengraos and others.

Canang

Canang genten
Alasnya: janur atau daun pisang bentuk segi empat
Isinya: diatas alasnya diisi berturut-turut plawa -  porosan – tetuasan dari janur berbentuk kojong/tangkih – bunga-bungaan – bunga rampai – minyak.

Canang lengawangi-buratwangi 
Alasnya: janur berbetuk segiempat dan di bagian bawahnya dilengkapi 3 tangkih
Isinya:
Tangkih pertama berisi bahan buratwangi yaitu campuran akar-akaran berbau wangi , cendana, majegau dsbnya yg dihaluskan.
Tangkih kedua berisi lengawangi yaitu campuran kacang komak,ubi,keladi, pisang kayu mentah, semua bahan digosongkan lalu dihaluskan.
Tangkih ketiga berisi minyak lengawangi bewarna putih yaitu campuran menyan dan malam pd minyak dan wewangian tersebut.
Diatas tangkih-tangkih tersebut dilengkapi seperti canang genten dan ditambahkan dg kiping,biu mas,tebu.

Canang sari
Alasnya: ceper bungkulan atau tamas
Sampiyannya: sampyan bundar (uras sari)
Isi  ceper: plawa,seiris tebu,seiris pisang mas, kekiping, tubungan, seclemik beras kuning
Isi sampiyan: Bunga-bungaan dan kembang rampe dan disemprotkan minyak wangi

Tadah pawitra/tadah sukla
Alasnya: janur berbetuk segiempat dan di bagian bawahnya dilengkapi 1 tangkih.
Isinya: Tangkih  berisi  campuran kacang komak,ubi,keladi, pisang kayu mentah, semua bahan digoreng dan diletakkan pd tangkih. Diatas tangkih tersebut  dilengkapi seperti canang genten.

Canang gantal
Alasnya: janur atau daun pisang bentuk segi empat.
Isinya: diatas alasnya diisi berturut-turut plawa -  tubungan. Bedanya tubungannya terdiri dari 7 bh lekesan yg digabungkan menjadi satu dg tali atau benang atau biasa pula ditusuk dg semat. Diatasnya lagi diisi sampyan uras metajuh dg disusuni bunga dan kembang rampe. Pinangnya ada disamping tubungan gantal tersebut.

Canang tubungan
Alasnya : janur atau daun pisang bentuk segi empat.
Isinya: diatas alasnya diisi berturut-turut plawa -  tubungan . Bedanya tubungannya terdiri dari 2 bh tubungan bersilang lalu diikat dg sirih pula. Diatasnya lagi diisi sampyan uras metajuh dg disusuni bunga dan kembang rampe.

Canang pengraos
Alasnya: terdiri atas 2 buah taledan maplekir
Isinya:
Taledan pertama berisi: Satu kojong gambir, Satu kojong pinang, Satu kojong kapur, Satu kojong tembakau,  Ditengah-tengahnya diisi lembaran-lembaran sirih, Satu ceper rokok dan korek.
Taledan kedua berisi: Beras kuning, Minyak wangi.
Terakhir diatas taledan tersebut ditambahkan canang sari

Canang nyahnyah gringsing
Alasnya: janur atau daun pisang bentuk segi empat
 Isinya: diatas alasnya diisi berturut-turut 1 tangkih berisi nyahnyah gringsing ( ketan dan ketan hitam disangan kering,jgn sampai hangus)- plawa -  porosan – tetuasan dari janur berbentuk kojong/tangkih – bunga-bungaan – bunga rampai – minyak.

Canang payasan
Alasnya: ituk-ituk
Isinya: plawa-porosan-sampyan payasan berisi bunga.

Canang Pabersihan/pasucian  payasan
Alasnya: ceper dg 7 celemik dan tampelan yg dijahit pd ceper tersebut.
Isinya:
Diatas alasnya diisi: Tepung tawar, Sisig ( jaja uli dibakar gosong), Ambuh (daun kembang sepatu diiris halus), Boreh miik, Minyak wangi, Kekosok terbuat dari Tepung beras diwarnai kuningnya kunyit, Nasi aon.
Diatasnya disusuni canang payasan

Canang meraka
Alasnya: sebuah ceper
Isinya: jajan, pisang dan buah-buahan. Dengan sampyan sri kekili atau boleh pula sampyan uras.

Canang rebong
Alasnya: dulang kecil
Isinya: dibagian tengah ditancapkan sebatang pohion pisang kecil dipohon pisang tsb ditancapkan lidi-lidi berisi bunga serta seserojan (jejahitan paku pipid ) perlengkapan lainnya yaitu beras kuning, air cendana,lengawangi-buratwangi, tadah pawitra, masing-masing dg dialasi tangkih, pisang mas, jaja kekiping dan diatasnya disusuni bunga.

Canang oyodan
Alasnya: dulang kecil atau wakul lonjong
Isinya: dibagian tengah ditancapkan sebatang pohion pisang kecil dipohon pisang tsb ditancapkan lidi-lidi berisi bunga serta seserojan (jejahitan paku pipid) perlengkapan lainnya yaitu beras kuning, air cendana,lengawangi-buratwangi, tadah pawitra, masing-masing dg dialasi tangkih, pisang mas, jaja kekiping dan. ditambah pula dg sebuah tumpeng, nyahnyah gula kelapa (campuran ketan-injin –beras merah-beras putih-kelapa sisir-gula dicampur lalu dinyahnyah) diatasnya disusuni bunga

Canang berkat
Alasnya: taledan janur maplekir atau 1 bh tamas (diameter 20 cm)diisi clemik.
Isinya:
cara meletakkan tetandingan dalam empat arah yaitu atas-bawah-kiri-kanan:
Daun-daun kayu yg diperlukan: 4 potong daun selasih miik, 4 potong daun beringin, 4 potong daun ancak, 4 potong blangsah pinang (buah), 4 potong kayu mas.
Diatas daun-daun kayu tsb diisi: 4 bh tampelan, 4 bh lekesan tali benang, 4 bh leletan, 4 bh tubungan.
Bahan pesucian yg dimasukkan: 4 clemik boreh miik, 4 clemik sisig + asem/tebu, 4 clemik ambuh, 4 clemik irisan daun pucuk, 4 clemik minyak wangi.
Bahan-bahan yg lain yg masuk: 4 clemik beras putih, 4 clemik beras kuning, 4 clemik kencur diiris, 4 clemik tadah sukla, 4 clemik nyahnyah gringsing, 4 clemik ampo, 4 clemik dedes rasmen, 4 clemik kacang komak goring, 4 clemik kacang putih goring, 4 bidang kekiping, 4 bh pisang mas.
Setelah semua lengkap diatasnya ditutup dg 1 bh sampyan bundar besar yg diisi bunga dan kembang rampe.



Daksina

Daksina alit
Alasnya: sebuah bedoggan dimana pada dasarnya diisi tapak dara janur
Isinya:
Beras sejumput lalu sebutir kelapa mapelut lalu dilengkapi dg kojong-kojong berisi: Pesel-peselan (dari daun manggis-ceroring-salak-mangga-durian), Gegantusan, Sebutir telur itik, Satu tampelan, Tingkih, Pangi, Pisang kayu mentah, Benang putih.
Lalu dilengkapi dg canang payasan dan canang genten.

Daksina linggih
Alasnya: sebuah bedogan dialasi dg sangku perak/aluminium.
Isinya: Sebuah tapak dara, Sejumput beras, 1 buah kelapa mapelut, 1 kojong telur itik, 1 kojong Gegantusan, Satu tampelan, 1 kojong Tingkih, 1 kojong Pangi, 1 kojong irisan Pisang kayu mentah dan tebu, 1 buah canang sari, Benang putih, 1 ikat uang lekeh.

Daksina pekala-kalaan
Alasnya: sebuah bedogan besar dimana pada dasarnya diisi tapak dara janur
Isinya:
beras sejumput lalu 2 butir kelapa mapelut lalu dilengkapi dg kojong-kojong berisi: 2 Pesel-peselan (dari daun manggis-ceroring-salak-mangga-durian), 2 Gegantusan, 2 butir telur itik, 2  tampelan, 2 bh Tingkih, 2 bh Pangi, Pisang kayu mentah, Benang putih.
Lalu dilengkapi dg canang payasan dan canang genten.

Daksina krepa
Alasnya: sebuah bedogan besar dimana pada dasarnya diisi tapak dara janur.
Isinya:
beras sejumput lalu 3 butir kelapa mapelut lalu dilengkapi dg kojong-kojong berisi: 3 bh Pesel-peselan (dari daun manggis-ceroring-salak-mangga-durian), 3 bh Gegantusan, 3 butir telur itik, 3 bh  tampelan, 3 bh Tingkih, 3 bh Pangi, Pisang kayu mentah, Benang putih.
Lalu dilengkapi dg canang payasan dan canang genten.

Daksina gede/galakan/pemogpog
Alasnya: sebuah bedogan besar dimana pada dasarnya diisi tapak dara janur.
Isinya:
beras sejumput lalu 5 butir kelapa mapelut lalu dilengkapi dg kojong-kojong berisi: 5 bh Pesel-peselan (dari daun manggis-ceroring-salak-mangga-durian), 5 bh Gegantusan, 5 butir telur itik, 5  tampelan, 5 bh Tingkih, 5 bh Pangi, Pisang kayu mentah, Benang putih.
Lalu dilengkapi dg canang payasan dan canang genten.



Bebantenan

Banten danan
Alasnya: 1 bh ceper bungkulan
Isinya: 2 bh celemik atau 1 kojong rangkadan berisi kacang-saur, 2 buah tumpeng, Diisi raka dan jaja sekebis-sekebis, Sampyan plaus lengkap dg porosan dan bunganya, 1 tanding canang.

Banten pejerimpen alit
Alasnya: 1 buah bedogan kecil
Isinya: raka dan jaja sekebis-sekebis, 1 bh tunpeng kecil, 1 kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jerimpen alit berisi bunga dan porosan.

Banten kawas/daun
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan kawas yg mana pd bagian atas tengah dijahitkan 1 bh kekojong maikuh dg dilengkapi 1 bh porosan dan bunga. Kemudian dibagian bawahnya dijahitkan 4 bh celemik.
Isinya:
Celemik no.1 berisi 1 bh kebeber putih polos dan 1 bh kebeber kuning mesari
Celemik no.2 berisi jajan kukus putih kuning
Celemik no.3 berisi lawar barak dan lawar putih
Celemik no.4 berisi sayur urab diisi nasi sasahan dan 1 bh sate kawas
Celemik no.5 ditengah-tengahnya diisi nasi sasahan dan 1bh sate kawas
Diatasnya dilengkapi dengan 1 bh canang.

Banten peras
Alasnya: taledan dan diatasnya diisi kulit peras.
Isinya: Beras sejumput, Benang putih, 1 bh tampelan, 2 bh tumpeng/untek peras, Tebu,tape,bantal, Kojong rangkadan berisi rerasmen, Raka-raka (pisang,buah dan jaja) selengkapnya, Sampyan peras biasa aataupun sampyan pengambyan, canang.

Penyeneng
penyeneng teenan (bebuat)
Alasnya: ituk-ituk yg dibagian atasnya dijahitkan jahitan penyeneng.
Isinya: beras dg benang  tetebus putih, nasi aon, tepung tawar.
penyeneng biasa
Alasnya: ceper bucu telu atau bias dg jembung.
Isinya: sampyan nagasari dijahit diatas alas kemudian ditambah unteng/tetuasan penyeneng
3 buah kekuwung.
penyeneng terag (gede)
Alasnya: wakul
Isinya:
1.      dasarnya adalah sampyan sreyok, dasar sampyan pengambyan
2.      3 batang kekuwung
3.      Tetuasan ati
4.      Tetuasan paku pipid
5.      Tetuasan cemara
6.      Tetuasan kepundung
7.      Tetuasan cempaka
8.      Tetuasan bungan isen
9.      Tetuasan kukun rangda

Banten sodan/ajuman/ajengan/rayunan
Alasnya: taledan, tamas, ceper dan sejenisnya.
Isinya: 2 bh penek, Tebu, Tape dan bantal, Raka-raka, Rerasmen dalam wadah celemik atau kojong rangkadan, Sampyan soda/plaus/kepet-kepetan.

Banten pengambyan
Alasnya: taledan
Isinya: Tumpeng 2 buah, 1 bh tipat pengambyan diletakkan ditengah-tengah tumpeng, 1 pasang tulung pengambyan diletakkan didepan tumpeng, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan pengambyan mesreyok, 1 bh canang.

Banten tulung
Alasnya: sebuah ituk-ituk ditempelkan 3 bh jejahitan tulung sangkur.
Isinya: nasi dan rerasmen, dapat pula dilengkapi dg sampyan plaus/payasan kecil lengkap dg bunga dan porosan.

Banten sesayut
Alasnya: sebuah kulit sesayut
Isinya: Nasi maklongkong, 1 bh kojong rangkadan lengkap dg rerasmen, Raka-raka, Sampyan nagasari lengkap dg bunga dan porosan.

Banten dapetan
Alasnya: sebuah taledan.
Isinya: Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh tumpeng, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, 1 bh sampyan jeet guak, Sesedep yang berisi beras putih dan benang putih, Sebuah penyeneng dan canang.

Banten tumpeng pengapit
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 2 buah tumpeng, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jeet guak, Canang.

Banten penyeneng
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 3 buah tumpeng, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jeet guak, Sebuah penyeneng, canang.

Banten guru
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 1  buah tumpeng guru, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jeet guak, canang.

Banten udel
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 1 buah tumpeng dibadannya ditusukkan ulam ati atau bias diganti dg bawang putih, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jeet guak.

Banten kurenan
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 2 buah tumpeng dikelilingi oleh 5 bh tumpeng kecil-kecil, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan pengambyan, canang.

Banten pengiring
Alasnya: 1 bh taledan
Isinya: 1 buah tumpeng, Raka-raka selengkapnya, Tebu & bantal & tape, 1 bh kojong rangkadan, Sampyan jeet guak, canang.
